Fen Cottage Walberswick with ev charger, ideal holiday cottage for couples

Fen Cottage - A freshly and stylishly renovated three bedroom cottage with plenty of residual charm and bags of Suffolk seaside light. Tucked away from, but very close to, the green (slide and swings), the beach, the ferry and two pubs. Sensitively renovated in 2021 to high Eco spec it has super insulation, triple glazing, EV charger, air source heat pump, and a scrupulous attention to environment friendly detail.

Of the three lovely bedrooms (two double and one twin), two have extensive views over the marshes towards Southwold and the harbour. From the Juliet balcony in the principal bedroom one can view both sunrise and sunset. The twin bedroom has a floor to ceiling window with harbour views. Ideal for 4 plus 2, do ask if you have any queries.

Fen Cottage is timber clad and has a stable door front entrance into the main sitting and dining space with its original brick chimney and open log fire. There is a back entrance hallway leading into the spacious open plan, cook-friendly kitchen with a large bay window seat suitable for breakfast, which overlooks the courtyard back garden. Outdoors is a single parking space with EV charger and a sunny sitting spot.

Fen Cottage offers a year round opportunity to sample the high comfort, low carbon* lifestyle in a beautiful setting in one of England’s loveliest seaside villages.

Guest review:

"We chose to stay at Fen Cottage primarily for the car charger however having stayed in the property next door last Summer, with our Labrador, we also knew it was positioned down a quiet lane with fantastic views to Southwold Blackshore. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the wild geese grazing on the field behind.  Seeing the lighthouse blinking at night and stepping out with so many lovely (dog) walks on the doorstep, not least a short stroll to the harbourside ( plus ferry) and beach is a real treat.
The cottage itself is very much run along sustainable lines and has an air source heat pump which successfully heats the property.  It is well insulated, so during the early Spring months we were warm and cosy with the added bonus of an open fire should we wish to light it. The kitchen is well provisioned and easy to navigate.
Trish looked after us well during our 2 rentals which we had arranged to cover the period between selling and buying a house. Efficient and friendly, she was a delight to deal with. SM 2023

We had a great week at Fen Cottage. The house is lovely, comfortable, stylish and with good beds, well equipped kitchen. The shower is great and views from upstairs are wonderful. We spent quite a lot of time in the garden. We really appreciated the welcome tray, so generous. The house is in a great location for beach and village. We struggled a bit with dishwasher as door doesn’t open properly but that is only (minor) issue with house. We ate at Bell and Anchor, both good. Black dog deli great for bread and delicious lunches. • We had a fantastic time thank you. A very special week for my mum's birthday, lots of reminiscing about when we've come to Walbs before. Perfect little bolthole in a wonderful location! AW July 2022

  • This is a sweet, quiet cottage just off the green. My Mother, I and friend had a relaxing stay. The view from the upstairs balcony across to Southwold is lovely. No tv was an advantage as we chatted, caught up on reading, had a girls pamper night with supplies we had brought and enjoyed games. Wishing other visitors happy times at Fen. AS July 2022

  • My Wife and I had a lovely stay at Fen Cottage. It was good to stay at a newly restored cottage that has been modernized whilst keeping character. We had fun learning to operate the new kitchen appliances. We cooked an uncooked pizza in the oven on the pizza setting. We purchased the pizza from the pizza takeaway in Walberswick. We frequented both very different pubs for meals out or just drinks. The Tea shed proved to be a good light lunch stop. We walked along the beach to The Ship at Dunwich where we just had drinks and rested our legs before the walk back. The mainly shingle beach did tire our legs out. On the first Monday of our stay we had booked online the day before for a guided tour of Southwold brewery. The tour went ahead even though it was just the two of us. The tastings at the end of the tour were particularly generous. I must have drunk two pints of beer in about twenty minutes with all the different tastings. My wife Carol tried some of the beers and the guide opened a can of cider for her too. On Carol's birthday we had a second visit lunch to the restaurant in the Sole Bay fish shop. Carol was brave and had the half of Lobster on both occasions. It was good to be remembered by the ferry operator on the return crossing. We used the ferry about five times during our two week stay and choosing to walk back using the footbridge on one occasion. It was nice to sit in the garden at Fen Cottage after our various times out. We would definitely return to Fen Cottage and Walberswick again. M&CS June 2022

Local Area

Pub: There is the Anchor and the Bell Hotel, in the village, for Adnams ales and much more. Both receive good foodie reviews. The Harbour Inn is just across the river, booking recommended. Plenty more eating places in Southwold or just along the coast that you can drive, walk or bike to, take-away service too!

Shop: The Co-op is the village general store, and Black Dog Deli serves delicious home made food and stocks locally sourced coffee, baked goods and usual deli goods. More shops and a cafe situated on the village green.

Beach: Easy walk from Fen cottage to Walberswick's sandy beach or to Southwold beach via the Bailey bridge or local ferry. Stretches of sand and shingle, sand dunes and further walks along the beach to Dunwich or Covehithe.

Other Local Attractions:

The quirky seaside town of Southwold with its traditional pier is an easy walk or cycle ride away, across the Bailey Bridge or along the river wall beside the Blyth where you can watch yachts and fishing boats. A special treat is catching crabs from Wally's bridge at Walberswick Harbour and the 'lost city' of Dunwich is a short drive away or walk along the beach, where you can visit the Dunwich Museum near the Ship Inn or explore forest walks and relax at the famous fish and chip shop on the beach.

Aldeburgh with its interesting array of local shops (more famous fish and chips) and hostelries, Thorpeness (the UK's first holiday village with its 60 acre boating Meare and quaint architecture), Orford and the internationally renowned Snape Maltings Concert Hall, shops, tepee cafe and walks beside the river (canoeing at Iken) are an easy half an hour's drive away.

RSPB Minsmere Reserve is well known for its avocets, marsh harriers and bitterns.
The Eel's Foot pub at Eastbridge is a good starting point for a circular walk to Dunwich Heath tea room, the RSPB reserve and across the marshes to visit the stained glass installation in the ruins of the monastery. The National Trust properties in the area include Dunwich Heath and Sutton Hoo, featured in the film 'The Dig' and English Heritage's Orford Castle (wonderful views from the battlements) and Framlingham Castle are well worth a visit.

There are numerous footpaths for dogwalkers too.. and cycle paths, and golf, clay pigeon shooting and horse riding are all available locally.
