First review:
Fen Cottage is a cosy eco-friendly retreat in the peaceful village of Walberswick. It is newly renovated and the modern creature comforts blend well with the rustic aesthetic. The open fire will make a stay in the cooler months warm and toasty. Lovely views from the back of the cottage look over the fields towards Southwold Harbour. Sandy dunes and pebble beaches are a short walk away, as is the town of Southwold via ferry, famous for the Adnams Beer brewery, hospitality and shops. AC May 2021

Guest reviews

  • The cottage was a lovely stay for us all with lovely views from the main bedroom out to Southwold. We really appreciated the goods on arrival and the kids enjoyed having a cosy place to stay. We brought our own stairgate for the 1 year old which worked fine and enjoyed making use of the facilities. Very nice shower with good power which is hard to find these days! Thanks for the stay here Trish and look forward to booking again sometime. BP September 2021

  • "Fen cottage made our stay in Walberswick very relaxing. It's in a super location, has beautiful decor and a view looking over the fens to Southwold harbour you could stare at all day." MB August 2021

  • We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is lovely, it was immaculately clean and we really liked it. I would definitely book again. Many thanks for the box of maps and leaflets, which were extremely useful. ET and family July 2021

Local Area

Pub: There is the Anchor and the Bell Hotel, in the village, for Adnams ales and much more. Both receive good foodie reviews. Sole Bay Fish Company and the Harbour Inn are just across the river, booking recommended. Plenty more eating places in Southwold or just along the coast that you can drive, walk or bike to, take-away service too!

Shop: The Co-op is the village general store, and Black Dog Deli serves delicious home made food and stocks locally sourced coffee, baked goods and usual deli goods. More shops and a cafe situated on the village green.

Beach: Easy walk to Walberswick's sandy beach or to Southwold beach via the Bailey bridge or local ferry. Stretches of sand and shingle, sand dunes and further walks along the beach to Dunwich or Covehithe.

Other Local Attractions:

The quirky seaside town of Southwold with its traditional pier is an easy walk or cycle ride away, across the Bailey Bridge or along the river wall beside the Blyth where you can watch yachts and fishing boats. A special treat is catching crabs from Wally's bridge at Walberswick Harbour and the 'lost city' of Dunwich is a short drive away or walk along the beach, where you can visit the Dunwich Museum near the Ship Inn or explore forest walks and relax at the famous fish and chip shop on the beach.

Aldeburgh with its interesting array of local shops (more famous fish and chips) and hostelries, Thorpeness (the UK's first holiday village with its 60 acre boating Meare and quaint architecture), Orford and the internationally renowned Snape Maltings Concert Hall, shops, tepee cafe and walks beside the river (canoeing at Iken) are an easy half an hour's drive away.

RSPB Minsmere Reserve is well known for its avocets, marsh harriers and bitterns.
The Eel's Foot pub at Eastbridge is a good starting point for a circular walk to Dunwich Heath tea room, the RSPB reserve and across the marshes to visit the stained glass installation in the ruins of the monastery. The National Trust properties in the area include Dunwich Heath and Sutton Hoo, featured in the film 'The Dig' and English Heritage's Orford Castle (wonderful views from the battlements) and Framlingham Castle are well worth a visit.

There are numerous footpaths for dogwalkers too.. and cycle paths, and golf, clay pigeon shooting and horse riding are all available locally.
