This quintessentially English seaside town is famous for the delightful brightly-coloured beach huts along the prom, Adnams brewery, wonderful pier and great shopping. Other interests include golf course, tennis courts, four museums, heritage railway and model yacht ponds.
The town boasts a fantastic selection of eateries, foodie shops, as well as well-known high street brands and unique independents.
Tours are available of the brewery, lighthouse, and the town (via horse and carriage). Sedate river trips are available or if you're a thrill-seeker have a 'blast' on the Coastal Voyager. A one-man or one-woman ferry rows passengers across the River Blyth to Walberswick (dogs, bicycles and pushchairs can all be accommodated).
The beach (a mix of sand and shingle) regularly receives a Blue Flag award. If you are bringing your dog then there is a large doggy-friendly area of beach (restrictions for some areas between 1 April - 30 September).
Southwold is perfect for idyllic family holidays and is a great base for walkers and cyclists. Footpaths criss-cross the large common, marshes and include a footbridge across the river to explore Walberswick.
IMPORTANT!
For those looking to walk across the bridge between Walberswick and Southwold, the Bailey Footpath Bridge is closed from 2 July - end of September 2021. Instead the Walberswick Ferry will be running for longer during the days but the last ferry will be at 6pm. If you miss the last ferry please be aware it is an eight mile trip by road.
