Compass Barn Wenhaston - ideal holiday home for a couple

Charming one bedroom former Coach House recently refurbished. This one bedroom immaculate property is ideal for a couple or single person wishing to explore Suffolk's beautiful coastline and inland villages.

First Guest review:  We very much enjoyed our stay at Compass Cottage. The accommodation is very well thought out and to a high standard. Wenhaston is a lovely place and there are lots of local walks, including heathland and bluebell wood. The pretty small market town of Halesworth is around three miles away and has good local amenities, and Wenhaston is ideally placed to visit beautiful coastal locations such as Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich. The owners are very helpful and on hand to make sure that your visit is an enjoyable one.  L & I M, May 2023

We had a lovely holiday and we would definitely recommend the Compass Barn cottage we stayed in and suffolk coastal cottages for easy booking and good communication. We went to a number of places, Southwold, Aldeburgh, Snape Maltings, Dunwich, Thorpeness, Sutton Hoo, Bungay, Beccles, Lowestoft. My husband also did the Adnams tour at Southwold.  We also are National Trust members, so used this membership at Sutton Hoo and Dunwich. We had lovely fish and chips for lunch at the Upper Deck Diner, Aldeburgh and also bought some smoked Prawns and crab from the huts on the front. We had lovely scones at the Adnams Cafe and a lovely meal at The Queens Head, Blyford. G B August 2023

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a most well equipped cottage. Everything we could have wished for, especially in view of our last minute decision to take a few days off. Thank you for arranging the stay for us. Most certainly we will return to Suffolk Coastal Cottages when we next visit your part of the world. Thank you D J August 2022

Local Area

Pub: The Star Inn and Blyford Queens Head are ten minutes walk away, both well known for good range of ales and relaxed meals in the garden. There are many more restaurants and pubs and farm shop cafes in the local area, try Black Dog Cafe and Deli in Halesworth !

Shop: There is a grocery shop at the end of the village about twenty minutes walk away. More independent foodie shops in Halesworth like Focus Organic and the Black Dog cafe and Deli . In Southwold, do visit Adnams Cellar and Kitchen shop and plenty of independent shops on the High Street too.

Beach: Southwold is ten minutes drive away, also Walberswick and Dunwich. Just further south are Thorpeness, Aldeburgh and Orford , or you could head north to Covehithe. Plenty of variety in the landscape!

Other Local Attractions:

There are plenty of local pubs and restaurants. At the moment we like The Anchor and The Bell Inn both in Walberswick, Bramfield Queens Head, Blyford Queens Head, Darsham Fox and Huntingfield Arms.

Local independent foodie shops that sell locally produced food:
Reckford Roost, Middleton

Churches:
Suffolk has great churches, full of history.. for local services see Blyth Valley Team Ministry and the Sole Bay Ministry.
We like Wenhaston with its Doom painting and Thorington with its Round Tower.
Blythburgh for its wonderful setting and carved angels on the roof.
Huntingfield with its painted ceiling
Walberswick and Southwold for fine flint work.

Walks:
There are numerous walks around the village on Blackheath and common land as well as footpaths leading to the Balancing Barn at Thorington, and on to Blythburgh, Southwold and Halesworth. Dogs are welcome to walk too.

Beaches:
South Lowestoft Beach is sandy and is at the eastern most point in the country.
Walk to Pakefield and Kessingland and keep heading south - only a few miles along the Suffolk Coast Path.
Southwold - plenty of sand by the Pier and Gun Hill, excellent cafes by the beach
Dunwich - a more stony beach but plenty of space for walking, swimming and a large car park next to the Flora Tea Rooms well known for fish and chips, there is also The Ship Inn and a museum well worth a visit telling the history of this special place.
Walk up by Dunwich Priory too.
A walk from Thorpeness to Aldeburgh and on to Felixstowe completes the coastal walk!
