Guest reviews

  • Enjoyed a few days in this lovely, cosy cottage. Perfect for four of us and the cottage has everything you could need. We didn’t use the garden due to the weather but it would be great for a sunny evening. Halesworth has everything you would expect for a small town, including nice restaurants and pubs. The cottage is only a few miles from delightful Southwold and a good location for Aldeburgh and many beach and countryside walks. April 2018

  • Wonderful stay, enjoyed exploring the area, cottage had everything you need. Character cottage and very cosy. Thank you. March 2018

  • We rented St Mary's cottage for a long weekend, as a base for country walking in the area. It was located in a very pleasant quiet position and was a very nice place to come back to after our days out. Our bedroom was warm and comfortable. The kitchen/diner was very well equipped, and everything worked very well. The lounge was very comfortable, with a modern smart TV and DVD player, with lots of books, DVDs and games available to use. We are hoping to stay there again sometime. March 2018

  • We have just spent the Christmas week at St Mary’s cottage, what a wonderful warm place to stay, all the facilities you need, full of character and charm a perfect place to get away from it all. Thank you very much. Dec 2017

  • "Such a lovely place to spend Christmas! St Mary's Cottage exceeded my expectations, being tastefully renovated and comfortably furnished to a high standard with much attention to detail.Every comfort was provided including top quality bed linen and towels. A wreath on the front door, fairy lights and garlands on the mantelpieces were the perfect Christmas touches, not to mention a delicious portion of Christmas cake and a bottle of wine. The cottage is in a very picturesque location with an ancient windmill on the hill behind the pretty and private rear garden. It is ideally situated to visit Southwold, Dunwich and Walberswick etc and Beau and I enjoyed our Christmas break immensely. Thank you."

Local Area

Pub: Halesworth is 20-30 minutes walk away, and there are several cafes, pubs and restaurants, like Cleone's, the Boarding Rooms, and several more (plus takeaway Chinese, Indian, fish and chips).

Shop: Holton Road Garden Centre and Café, and the well-stocked Market Fields farm shop are five minutes walk away selling a wide range of seasonal local produce and other groceries, frozen meals. Halesworth town centre is twenty minutes walk away and has several independent foodie shops, bookshop etc.

Beach: Fifteen minutes drive to Southwold and other local beaches nearby like Walberswick and Dunwich. Thorpeness and Aldeburgh are south, and Lowestoft is to the north.

Other Local Attractions:

The village of Holton lies in a conservation area and boasts St Peter’s church with its round tower and double roof. There are pubs and restaurants nearby, Halesworth is the nearest market town. Holton's Triple Plea, Wenhaston Star, Blyford Queen's Head and Huntingfield Arms are all within an easy drive, and more by the coast.

The cottage is about 100 feet from the old fan-tailed post mill which gives the village its emblem. The mill was probably built in its current form in the 17th century and is a remarkable landmark, (limited opening times).

Some interesting wildlife areas can be found in Holton including Lovers' Lane (an ancient pathway with old hedgerows), Holton Pits (warblers, damselflies and butterflies) and the Churchyard (glow worms). Further details can be found on the Wild About Halesworth leaflet, produced by the Halesworth Tourism Group.
