About Rose Cottage

Rose Cottage is part of an old Suffolk longhouse. Oak framed, with exposed beams and wattle and daub walls, it was built in 1676. The upstairs was added one or two centuries later. In much more recent times the cottage has been extensively modernised with every convenience, while retaining the original features. The remains of an old well can be seen in the back garden along with the pump handle.

The village of Holton lies in a conservation area and boasts St Peter’s church with its round tower and double roof. There are pubs and a farm shop close by, and the house is about 100 feet from the old fan-tailed post mill which gives the village its emblem. The mill was probably built in its current form in the 17th century and is a remarkable local landmark.

The village of Holton lies at the head of the Blyth Valley which is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. The river has sea trout and bass lower down, also otters. In the estuaries and marshland can be found marsh harriers, avocets, oyster catchers and birds which can rarely be seen anywhere else in Britain. In the walks round the back of the cottage are lakes and sand martins.

Less than a mile away the quiet market town of Halesworth is ideal for supplies, takeaways and restaurants; and boasts a theatre/arts centre - The New Cut. There is also a local golf course. The wider area is perfect for the classic seaside holiday, walking, cycling, bird watching, fishing and the various music festivals.
