The Garden House is a short stroll from our local pub, the
16th century Rumburgh Buck. The Buck is an award-winning CAMRA
free house with a good reputation for home-cooked food. Typical
entertainment at the Buck features live music and Rumburgh’s
own Morris dancers. The village church is well worth a visit
and has a Millennium tapestry depicting the houses in Rumburgh
including the Eco-House. Nearby are Wissett Wines at Valley
Farm Vineyard and St. Peter’s Brewery where you can
buy Suffolk wines and beers. Also nearby is South Elmham Hall
and Bateman’s Barn. Guided tours are offered at the
hall and there is a restaurant serving light snacks and amazing
Sunday brunches. Afterwards you can stroll across the fields
to the ruined Minster which was once part of the Bishop’s
Palace.
The charming market town of Halesworth is close by with its
pedestrian thoroughfare and many fine independent shops, cafes
and galleries. The Cut Arts Centre is located in the Old Maltings.
Cinema, theatre, music and art can be sampled here as well
as pre- theatre snacks and a café and bar. Halesworth
also has its own golf club and fishing lakes. Both welcome
day visitors. Horse riding is available at Mells Equestrian
Centre just outside Halesworth and for those who wish to relax
there is the Harmony Centre for Healing. There are aviation
museums at nearby Holton and Flixton in recognition of the
part played by the numerous Suffolk airbases during the Second
World War.
In 30 minutes by car you can be by the sea in Southwold and
Walberswick or at the Minsmere RSPB bird reserve. In the opposite
direction is the city of Norwich with its thriving old medieval
shopping streets, market, restaurants and castle. Just a 15
minute drive away takes you to Beccles and the Norfolk broads.
